Linda's Chewy Chocolate Cookies

Jane used to send these to me in care packages when she was away.
It's her mom Linda's recipe.

1 cup butter at room temperature (2 sticks)
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cups coca
2 cups flour
nuts or chocolate chips optional

mix in the order listed
roll into 1" balls & place 2" apart 
bake 350 degrees for 9 minutes
do not over bake (comes out very soft)

do not add chocolate chips 
they will cause structural failure 
and they'd be redundant

IDEAS: 
before baking dip tops in sugar
