Day 04. October 22. Rome.
Historic Rome.

forum excavationsSunday saw us bleary-eyed for our 6:45 wake up call. After breakfast we went to the forum with Francesca as our local guide. We started at the "wedding cake" Victor Emanuel II building which serves as city hall. The forum occupies several blocks behind Victor Emanuel. Lots more of Forum had been excavated in the previous six months. Now four to five times as much of the forum is visible as when Allan was last there. We saw the senate and the temples, then had a quick look at the Colosseum before heading back to the hotel.

st paul outside the wallsWe had lunch together at the pizzeria by San Giovanni Laterna where Allan went the first day. We had beer and pizza, then returned to the hotel for a nap. When we woke we went out for gelato before taking the afternoon tour of the catacombs, again with our local guide Francesca. An English-speaking religious volunteer led the 45-minute tour inside the catacombs. Before going back to the hotel we made a side trip to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.

When we returned, we rehung some still-drying clothes, had a light dinner and napped. Jane occasionally arose to re-hang laundry in the room (not the WC) for drying to finish.
